Just another way: today I’ll introduce Web-Sniffer’s standalone software application – for Windows and Mac – to test and check the current IP and URL Canonicalization status of your site.

I - Never forget about IP and URL Canonicalization

I – Never forget about IP and URL Canonicalization

Here I am again with the topic, because its importance is really high. If you want to avoid unintentional duplicate content (and the possibly penalties of the major search engines), you must check the IP and URL canonicalization of your site.
I’ve shown you some other ways on this site such as Web-Sniffer’s online SEO Tool and WooRank’s Website Review Tool. I’ve also mentioned the standalone software (applicable for both Windows and Mac) of Web-Sniffer.net.

Now, I’ll show and explain step by step how this useful software works. Let’s begin the work at once!

First of all, open your browser – it can be any of the available ones such as: Google Crome, FireFox, Safari, Opera, SlimJet – and visit http://web-sniffer.net. You’ll arrive here:

After clicking on “Check out our new free Web-Sniffer desktop app for Windows and Mac” bar you’ll get another screen (opens in the same window):

On this page, you can see all of the features you can get using this more than useful desktop application of Web-Sniffer.net. I’d like to explain some – the necessary ones –  of these features you should know for checking the IP and URL canonicalization status of your site.
Web-Sniffer HTTP Desktop App - Download Setup for Windows - IP And URL Canonicalization Test And Check - Another WayFirst of all, let’s download the software. Either click on the appropriate Operation System you are working with, or use “Right click > Save as” command. Then, run the setup.exe (on Windows) or Web-Sniffer.dmg (on MAC) file and follow the instructions.

After setting up the application, you can begin to work immediately. I’ll use Windows OS in my example, but it is quite similar on MAC.
Simply type in you site name you want to check (with or without www), click on “Request button, and you’ll see the results in a sec. I’ll use this site you are currently on, because it is my own site so it will not hurt the rights of anybody else. On the other hand, seoserviceguide.com is based on WP, so you’ll be given the chance to follow an IP canonicalization test on a WordPress site at the same time as well.

The processes and the results:

A. Testing the site without www:

Web-Sniffer Desktop App At Work - Testing A Site Without www - IP And URL Canonicalization Test And Check - Another Way

1. Status of the site:

As you could learn to interpret it previously, 200 Ok means in this in this case that I am using this site without www on the Internet.

2. Remote address:

This number is the IP address of the site.

 3. Other data:

You can also see and check other data such as the Response Header section with the relating data, plus the HTML code of the site as it looks from the point of view of a particular search engine.

You’ll be able to copy these data to your clipboard and save them for your further reference.

 B. Testing the site with www Web-Sniffer Desktop App At Work - Testing A Site With www - IP And URL Canonicalization Test And Check - Another Way

1. Status of the site:

If you use your site without www AND the site’s canonicalization is in order, you must get “301 Moved Permanently” response. The result gives us 301, so there is no duplicate content (the redirection works correctly).

Warning!
If you get here also 200 ok response, then it means that your site content seems duplicated even if you uploaded it to your server once!

2. Remote address:

It is the same as previously.

3. Other data:

You can also find here some other data, but not the content of your site because this address is ONLY a REDIRECTION to your VALID content.

C. RFC 2616 Tab:

This tab opens a document which explains and specifies a current internet standard Hypertext Transfer Protocol – HTTP/1.1. (Copyright (C) The Internet Society (1999). All Rights Reserved.). See a part of it below:

Web-Sniffer.net - RFC 2616 - This tab opens a document which explains and specifies a current internet standard Hypertext Transfer Protocol - HTTP/1.1. (Copyright (C) The Internet Society (1999). All Rights Reserved.).

Conclusion and assessment:

If you want simply to know the current status of your site from canonicalization aspect, this tool has been made for you. Beyond the simplicity, another advantage of this site that you can get your data very quickly and accurately. Plus, the creators of this app also integrated an explainer section (RFC 2616, just click on the Tab) about Hypertext Transfer Protocol –HTTP/1.1. It is really worth reading it (I’ve done the same), you can gather relevant and vital information if you are interested in this topic.

I hope I could help you in your work with this small explanation.
