I’d like to show you some other ways to test and check IP and URL Canonicalization of your site. We’ll see WooRank’s SEO Tools today.

I - Never forget about IP and URL Canonicalization

I – Never forget about IP and URL Canonicalization

I’ve mentioned and explained on my IP and URL Canonicalization Checker Services And Tools page what canonicalization is and how to check it, so I don’t want to repeat myself this time. As a summary, you must check the IP and URL canonicalization of your site if you want to avoid unintentional duplicate site content and prevent yourself from any penalties of the various Search Engines (and removing your site from their Index). I’ve also shown you how to use the very useful online SEO Tool of Web-Sniffer.net for this purpose.

Now, we’ll see another SEO Tool at work and I’ll explain how to interpret the the obtained results. For this test, I’ll use this site you are currently on: seoserviceguide.com, because it belongs to me and so it may not hurt the rights of anybody else. I use this site address as it is written, without www, that is http://seoserviceguide.com. The site is WordPress based, so we’ll be able to see an IP canonicalization test on WordPress, too.

Testing and checking IP and URL canonicalization on WooRank.com

I’ve already mentioned WooRank.com in other context on my SEO Site Status Checker Tools page on this site. Now, we’ll see its another useful feature they offer. WooRank’s SEO Tools seems to the easiest solution at the first sight and they are really easy-to-use ones. WooRank offers a limited Free Service besides its paid one. It means, that you can check only one site once a day and you’ll be able to get almost full report online (without printable or downloadable documents). We’ll do this job now and use their Website Review Service.

Go to http://www.woorank.com and type in the URL of your site.  Now, you’ll be taken to the Website Review main results page. You’ll get the similar picture:

Yes, you’re right: there is something to improve in order to reach the 100%, lol. Our job for today is to check the right IP and Url canonicalization of my site, so we’ll go to SEO section (click on SEO on the left menu):

Woorank.com - Website Review, SEO section - IP And URL Canonicalization Test - Another Ways To Check

Now, let’s evaluate the results. Once if we are here, I’ll show you some other important factors, too:

a. WWW resolve: OK!

This website with or without www redirects to the same page.

b. IP Canonicalization: OK!

“Good, your website’s IP address is forwarding to your website’s domain name”.

c. Robots.txt: OK!

Robots.txt will tell Search Engines what and how to do on your site (allow or disallow some areas, plus includes the place of the sitemap(s)).

d. XML sitemap: OK!

XML sitemap contains the links of your pages. It is like the Table of Contents of your site, constructed from links. The Search Engines will crawl your site with using sitemap.xml file. If something is missing from it, then your site will not crawled well. What kind of sitemap – e.g sitemap index with several other sitemaps, sitemap for images and videos, etc. – you’ll create is entirely up to you: the main thing is that it must contain all of your relevant links but not the ones which you disallowed to crawl in your robots.txt file. If you want to read more about sitemap.xml and robots.txt files, please visit my What Is Indexing And PageRank page on this site.

e. URL Rewrite: OK!

“Great! You have clean (user-friendly) URLs which do not contain query strings”. With other words, the URL Titles don’t contain special characters (for example the well-known separator character =| which is used frequently in Titles e.g. in this way: {post title} | {site title}) so it is considered to User Friendly URL.

f. Underscores in the URL: OK!

Unlike in other programming languages (e.g. Java, PHP), it is NOT recommended to use underscores in the links. These underscores make binding between the words, so an underscored  phrase has significantly less SEO worth. See an example: “this_is_an_underscored_link” – it will look “thisisanunderscoredlink” in the eyes of the Search Engines. If you use dashes instead of underscores, every word will keep its identity and significance. You can also find a description about it in Google’s Guidelines (about SEO).

In this section we could see that our URL passed these test, but could not any information about the usage of the domain name, that is it is working with www or without it. For this to discover, we might want to go to Usability section on WooRank’s site. Let’s do it just now:

g. Usability of a URL

WooRank.com, Usability Section - IP And URL Canonicalization Test - Check It With WooRank

It comes out of the test, that I am using this site without www. If I make summary with the data above, I can state that the IP and URL canonicalization of my site is working well.

Assessment of WooRank’s IP and URL Canonicalization Tool

Personally, I like this tool because it is very simple, accurate and quick. However, if you want to check your HTTP header status and other data or you want to run more tests, you might want to find another sources together with it as well.

For an average SEO worker on his own, this tool can give you enough data to work with. As a Free member (as I’ve mentioned above, you can use it only once a day and for one site), this tool is recommended if you want to simply make certain about the current status of your site within no time.

Additionally, I’d like to remind you again to take care of the correct IP and URL Canonicalization on your web site, in order to avoid any issues and possibly penalties.

I hope I could help you in your work with sharing my ideas and experience, together with presenting some Tools for Checking IP and URL Canonicalization.

P.S.: In my next posts I’ll present another approaches to the IP and URL canonicalization test and check (including WordPress sites, of course). They will be as follows:

1. IP And URL Canonicalization Test And Check – Another Way – I’ll present Web-Sniffer’s standalone desktop application (for Windows and MAC) at work.

2. IP And URL Canonicalization Test And Check – Another Method – I’ll introduce Statscrop.com’s SEO Tool and will make an IP canonicalization test on my WordPress site.
